Definition: Umbrage

  • Umbrage [n]

to feel upset or annoyed, usually because you feel that someone has been rude or shown no respect to you.

I found this word today in a book review on Goodreads, Lost to the West: The Forgotten Byzantine Empire That Rescued Western Civilization by Lars Brownworth:

I hated it by the end of the second sentence of the introduction. Maybe this is because I have a degree in Medieval Studies, but I take extreme umbrage at the usage of “Dark Ages” even in a somewhat un-scholarly work such as this.

– [archaic] shade or shadow, especially as cast by trees.
